Robot Lawn Mower Buying Guide by Yard Layout

Start with the lawn the machine must reach, then compare navigation, capacity and the work you will still do.

Draw the mowing area before setting a budget

A property address or real estate listing gives you a lot size, not a mowing area. Sketch the grass separately from the house, driveway, flower beds, patio and woodland. Mark every disconnected patch. A machine that can comfortably maintain the main lawn may still need someone to carry it to a fenced strip. That recurring task matters more than an attractive coverage headline.

Use the drawing as a shopping checklist. Note gates, steps, tree roots, drainage channels and places where wheels could leave the lawn. Measure narrow connections at their tightest point, including the space taken up by plants in summer. Those details let you ask a seller concrete compatibility questions.

Choose navigation for the difficult part of the yard

Compare the navigation requirements of exact models, rather than assuming every wire-free mower uses the same approach. The official ECOVACS, Dreame and Mammotion pages linked below describe different combinations of positioning and sensing. Their feature lists are manufacturer claims, not evidence that one system will work better on your property.

Identify the location most likely to cause difficulty: a passage between tall walls, an area under trees, or a featureless open section. Ask how the candidate handles that specific situation and what installation is required. Also check whether its charging position, antenna or network connection can actually be accommodated where you intend to put it.

Buy enough working time, not only enough rated acreage

Two lawns with equal area can demand different amounts of work. One may be a rectangle; another may be a series of narrow zones with furniture and long travel routes. Build a realistic schedule that leaves time for charging, weather interruptions and days when the yard is occupied. Treat the advertised maximum as a screening figure until its operating assumptions are clear.

A more expensive capacity version is worth considering when it solves a documented scheduling constraint. It is less persuasive when the extra acreage has no relevance to your lawn. Compare each variant's battery, permitted area and included accessories before paying for a family name or flagship badge.

Account for the finishing jobs

Plan how you will trim borders, remove fallen branches and inspect the cutting system. Decide where the mower will be stored out of season and how you will obtain replacement blades. An attractive app does not remove these ownership tasks. Ask to see the maintenance instructions before ordering, especially if you want a machine that someone else in the household can manage.

Our approach is conditional: shortlist a mower only after the area, routes, slope limits and installation all fit. Then compare delivered cost and support. This is a research-based buying framework, not a hands-on ranking. Keep a conventional mowing option until the new machine's suitability has been established on your own lawn.
